Inspiration for my ensuite bathroom. Thank you Pinterest!
Can you believe we’ve had the house for a month already? Where has the time gone? It feels like we’ve accomplished so much and so little all at the same time! This week we started on some big projects like tearing out the closet drywall in the master bedroom to make way for the ensuite and the electrical in the basement. The ensuite will be an ongoing project for several weeks as we work in it and await the assistance of several contractors but I found some shower tile and shower doors this week so that felt like a huge victory. Yes, I got them from Habitat and yes, I saved a lot of money on brand new items. I decided the navy vanity that I was putting in the basement would fit better in the ensuite upstairs and making that decision helped me to select the design plan for the room. I have a vanity base for the basement still and just need to order a vanity top for it so that’s not a huge issue. I’ll work on purchasing the rest of the fixtures for the bathroom next week, but I know my plumber is busy for awhile and he’s installing my shower tile and all so I’m putting the ensuite on pause for now.
The basement is a mess but wow do the pot lights make a big difference!
Having the electrician start this week was amazing. He started and finished the rec room lighting, the basement bathroom and part of the master lighting as well. You wouldn’t even believe the difference the pot light makes in the basement! It went from dungeon lighting to functional room lighting and although I have no idea how much it cost me yet, I love it and I’m going to keep telling myself it’s worth it! We hadn’t worked on the basement since week one knowing that the electrician needed to cut several large holes in the ceiling to complete the wiring and it seemed silly to work on finishing the basement when we’d have to turn around and redo a lot of it anyway. Once the electrician is done in the basement and the ceiling drywall has been repaired then we can start flooring and Grayson will be able to move into the rec room until his room is completely done. His room will be awhile as we’re waiting on the leak to be fixed and for the new basement window to arrive that will make it a legal bedroom.
There were some smaller projects on the go this week too, I’ve yet to make it a week without going to the store at least twice to pick up supplies. One of this weeks supply runs was for trim. I came to the realization that I’ve added a lot of extra walls to the house with the ensuite and walk-in closet and I wouldn’t have enough of the existing trim to cover those walls. I mentioned before that I think the trim is dated, so there was not a lot of grumbling on the way to the store to buy new modern trim from part of the main floor. I decided to put new trim in the kitchen, living and dining room and the hallway and then use the old trim for those room to do my additions. This way the most seen areas of the main floor have the new modern feel I was going for since I was going to have to buy some new trim anyway.
The other big little project that I started was the flower wall in the girl’s room. I say big because it’s going to be incredibly time consuming but it’s actually such a small thing everyone keeps bugging me about why I’m even working on it right now. Honestly, I feel like I won’t end up doing it if I don’t start it right now. If I leave it until I’m ready to move in I know things will get rushed and I won’t have a chance and as soon as there’s furniture in the room, it’s game over. So as trivial as the project is it’s important to me that it gets done now while I still have time and ambition. I’m going to try and keep track of how long it takes me to do it for any of you ambitious DIYers out there. So far, I’m about 4 hours in but I’ll do a breakdown article just for the flower wall once it’s done, which hopefully will be soon!
There have been so many delays because of covid and a lot of the projects that I was hoping to start and finish first, like the basement, will likely be the last projects to be completed. Waiting for all these pieces to fall into place is stressing me out just a little but. I’m still financing the renovations out of pocket, with some financial support from my brother and Grayson, until any of the projects have been completed 100%. That means 100% of the house has to be painted or 100% of the flooring has to be installed or 100% of the kitchen cabinets have to be installed and all of these projects seem to be waiting on other projects before they can be completed so I’m over here impatiently waiting and anxiously staring at my bank account willing it to hold on a little longer. They say renovations are stressful. I think that’s a bit on an understatement… maybe I’m just doing renovations wrong? If you’ve found a better way to do it, please tell me in the comments below! I know this won’t be my last renovation project, so I’d like to do it right/better next time!
By the way, Thalia says hi!
